Engineering Context¶
Purpose¶
This page explains how ETIS treats post-release learning and stewardship.
Trustworthy systems require continuing responsibility. The work does not end when a deployment is monitored. The evidence produced during operation should shape the next cycle of engineering.
ES-114 converts evidence into learning, learning into decisions, and decisions into stewardship actions.
Learning is evidence-based¶
Post-release learning should start from evidence, not memory.
Evidence may include monitoring logs, operational event records, incident records, access and data checks, guardrail monitoring, AI monitoring, user feedback, risk updates, defect records, deployment limits, and release conditions.
A lesson without evidence may still be useful, but it should be labeled as judgment or observation.
Stewardship is ongoing ownership¶
Stewardship asks:
- What must continue to be watched?
- What must be fixed?
- What must be redesigned?
- What must be re-tested?
- What must be communicated better?
- What risks remain?
- What decisions need accountable ownership?
- What should the next cycle prioritize?
Stewardship is how systems avoid decay.
Incidents and defects as learning sources¶
Incidents and defects are not just problems to close.
They reveal requirement ambiguity, design weakness, implementation fragility, missing tests, weak monitoring, poor communication, governance gaps, and operational mismatch.
ES-114 should identify the level where the learning belongs.
Feedback synthesis¶
Feedback should be grouped into themes.
Useful categories include usability, workflow fit, scope clarity, evidence clarity, access and data rules, AI trust and control, operational support, monitoring gaps, training needs, and roadmap requests.
Feedback becomes actionable when it is clustered, prioritized, and assigned.
Guardrail and AI learning¶
Guardrails and AI controls require special attention.
Ask which guardrails held, which were only partially verified, which failed, whether users understood AI status, whether AI remained disabled or controlled, whether AI-use records were adequate, and whether AI capability should be enabled, delayed, redesigned, or prohibited.
AI learning should include both system AI functionality and AI-assisted engineering practices.
Technical debt and improvement backlog¶
Technical debt should be explicit.
Examples include an unverified failure path, incomplete access matrix, weak test harness, unclear status model, manual monitoring burden, missing data cleanup process, unclear retention rule, or deferred AI workflow.
Debt is not automatically bad. Hidden debt is bad.
Next-cycle routing¶
ES-114 should route work to the right stage.
Do not send every improvement directly to implementation.
Examples:
- unclear user need → ES-101 or ES-102;
- new requirement → ES-102;
- plan adjustment → ES-103;
- architecture change → ES-104;
- design correction → ES-105;
- code fix → ES-107;
- review process change → ES-108;
- test gap → ES-109;
- release criteria issue → ES-110;
- operational model issue → ES-111;
- deployment issue → ES-112;
- monitoring issue → ES-113.
Do not make the backlog a dumping ground. Each backlog item should have evidence, priority, owner, and routing.
A system’s maturity is measured by how well it learns.
